The original Church belonged to Benedettini monks under the title of Castiglione St. Mary, who, transferred to St. Benedetto of Pergio valley in Piemonte, left the church in administration maybe to a parish priest, who took later-on the title of Rector.
The church (if such was not under the monks) became parish dedicated to George and Helen saints.
The church belonged to Brugnato nullius diocesis Abbey, when this in 1133 was promoted to Episcopal see, and maybe also before.
In December 1054, among the known properties of Genoa Church in Sestri Levante, the ones owned in Campegli are specifically mentioned.
On march 6th 1162 the Pope Alexander 3rd confirmed the property of Saint George church in Campegli to S.Frutuoso of Capodimonte (Portofino) abbey following his predecessor Innocenzo 3rd example .
The properties of St. George in Campegli are mentioned in a July 5th 1191 deed executed before William Cassinese notary and on May 22, 1213 Albert de Prato, as appears in the Peter Rufo notary file, sold some lands in Castiglione area.
On march 1312 the priest Pagano was “minister of St. George in Campegli”. The church assumed then as a co titular St. Helen and with the two titular on January 1483 was aggregated to the Massasco parish Church by monsignor Antonio Valletaro, bishop of Brugnato.
On November 1502 James Copello, rector of Saint George and Helen church in Campegli swore allegiance to Laurence Fieschi, bishop of Brugnato.
Campegli in ancient times was positioned more on high, that is on the hill where its ancient parish church is still; the place was later on abandoned because of pestilence.
The people built on 1682 another parish church dedicated to Saint Rocco and Gaetano, going on nevertheless with the reverence towards S. Helen (whose relics are under the high altar).
Church St.Helen |
St. Helen church shows on the front the remains of freestone of the ancient building of 12 th century. Near the same there is St. Sebastian oratory, which was the dining hall of the ancient monastery.
The bishop Francis Agnini, on his visit of September 22 th, 1841 knew by the old men that on the mountain called Pu there was an oratory dedicated to St. Barbara virgin and martyr.
The bishop, having seen the building reduced to irreverent uses decided for repairing and opening up again to the cult, especially for some families convenience, as they were living in a place two miles far from parish church.
The present parish church had widening and embellishing works in different times particularly in 1822 and 1898.
